Obama McCain - Comparing health care proposals

There is an interesting article on Dallas Morning News that provides a simple point by point break down of both Presidential candidates' health care proposals.

Two key points from Obama are;

  • Requires that all children have health insurance.
  • Requires all but the smallest employers to provide insurance or contribute to the cost but would exempt the smallest businesses.

and McCain

  • Provides $2,500 tax credits ($5,000 for families) to buy insurance. Recipients would have to pay taxes on the portion of benefits paid for by employers.
  • Makes plans portable and accessible across state lines.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation website has an interesting side-by-side tool that provides a more detailed look.

The side-by-side comparison below focuses on important health care issues not necessarily addressed in the candidates' health care reform proposals. This interactive tool, prepared by the Kaiser Family Foundation with the assistance of Health Policy Alternatives, Inc., allows users to compare the candidates proposals and positions on a range of health care issues. The comparisons are based on information compiled from the candidates' Web sites, speeches and campaign debates. When we were unable to find a public statement from a candidate on a particular issue, we indicated this with "campaign has not addressed." Prior to posting, the campaigns were given the opportunity to review and comment on the content of this side-by-side.

The side-by-side tool can be found here http://www.health08.org/healthissues_sidebyside.cfm.

Thinking about McCain and Obama and health, or, more specifically, survival:

You know the etymology (or is it entomology?) of the word Politics: "poly"
= many; "tics" = blood-sucking insects.

My sentiments exactly.

Please permit me to stick in my 2 cents' worth here on the elections. I have
a great deal of respect for people who want to sit out the national
elections, or write in, oh, Joe the Plumber, your Pastor, your Starbucks
Barista, Angelina, Condoleezza, Popeye the Sailor Man, whoever. I just long
to stride into the voting booth, coolly look past the D's and R's, and vote
for "None of the above."

At one time my husband and I were about decided to write in each other.

But now we've reconsidered.

With cranky McCain ("Bombombomb, bomb-bomb Iran") still defending the
doctrine of pre-emptive war, and Obama openly espousing the most cruel and
coercive pro-abortion legislation that's ever been proposed in this country
(FOCA)--- and Obama furthermore endorsing ill-considered military projects
like "pursuing the Taliban into Pakistan" (with or without Pakistan's
permission! ---do you realize how crazy this is? --- some "peace"
candidate!) I consider that our most grave and sober obligation is to
achieve a situation where neither of them can do their worst.

And that can be achieved, as far as I can see, only with a divided
government: the President in one party, and the Congress in the other.

This is the only way to block an ambitious Presidency or a runaway Congress
from achieving their most reckless and morally disastrous goals.

For this reason, since I regard the election of a Democratic Congress this
November as a safe bet, I think the wisest and most prudent move is to vote
for McCain-Palin.

A word on Sarah Palin. The Media haven't told us, but this lady brought the
whole corrupt Republican Establishment in Alaska crashing down a couple of
years ago by charging the head of her own party with ethics violations, and
trouncing the Republican incumbent, Murkowski, for the governorship. The
people of Alaska - who know her best --- support her with 80% approval
ratings.

But my main strategic reason for voting McCain-Palin is to activate the
structural safeguard of the division and separation of powers as provided by
the Constitution. We need "divided government" this time around, because
only in this way can we ensure that there will be built-in oversight ---
built-in critics - and built-in brakes --- on this wild carnival ride known
as the United States Government, careening through a dangerous world.

So I say, vote McCain-Palin.

Only God knows what the future holds, but my considered judgment is that
this (McCain-Palin, HEMMED IN AND HAVING TO NEGOTIATE every inch of the way
with a Democratic-controlled Congress) is the best choice at hand for Life,
for Peace, and for the future of those we care about.

I could be wrong, but this is how it looks to me and mine.

Lord have Mercy, 40x

--- and Love to you and yours,

Julianne Wiley

P.S. Please don't get mad at me for blasting this forth to everybody in my
address book. At least I'm not offering you $40,000,000 in Nigerian
currency if you'll just send me your SSN and your bank routing code. And if
you don't care for the message, just smile and say "Well, Bless your heart,
honey" and ... hey, that's what the delete button is for...
