Fight & Win Muscular Dystrophy with Ayurvedic Treatment

The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic conditions that are characterised by progressive muscle weakness. Two of these types affect only males, with rare exceptions. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects about 1 in 3,500 males. Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) affects about 1 in 30,000 males although this may be an underestimate due to its variable severity. DMD and BMD are due to different changes in the dystrophin gene, which contains information for a protein that is important for…See More

The Ayush Muscular Dystrophy Society

The AMD Society , a Charter of AYUSH Samiti® has been active in the field of authentic Ayurvedic rehabilitation which was first intitiated by Dr Mukesh Jain under expert clinical guidance of Padma Shri Prof M P Pandey in Central Medical Institute, Bhilai in 1995. The Patients are diagnosed by modern methods (Multiplex PCR technique for dystrophin gene analysis, muscle biopsy and immunostaining for dystrophin, NCV). Ayurvedic Panch Karma and Yoga therapists then carry out a family support based rehabilitation program, which increases the duration of the ambulatory stage.

This Ayurvedic approach has been developed wherein patient’s care taker is also actively invloved in the rehabilitative programs at a special clinic in Bhilai. This holistic approach has proven to be more beneficial to the families and is being explored further.

A number of families of afflicted children are registered with AMD society, which is involved in helping families with information about all aspects of NMD including Ayurvedic Treatment, Yogic support, physiotherapy, diet, monitoring the breathing, and updates about what is new in the form treatments that may be in the pipeline. Regular meetings with the families are held to identify their needs like wheelchairs, ankle foot orthosis, spinal braces, cough-assistive devices etc.

Future Plans:-

(i) To become a part of International Research Group for participation in multi-center clinical trials.
(ii) To set up a molecular diagnostics facility in Bhilai.
(iii) To develop new strategies to improve the management of Neuro-Muscular disability.

All this require the formation of a vibrant team involving physiotherapists, dietician, psychologist, molecular biologists, clinical research coordinator, social workers and volunteers apart from the expert Panch Karma doctor specialised in NM Treatment.

Dear Fellow Member:

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 24 million Americans have DM, and about 6 millions of them are not aware that they are diabetics. By the time when they are diagnosed with DM for abnormal blood glucose tests, they have likely had other ongoing pathological changes inside their bodies such as cataracts, retinopathy, arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis, hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke, arthritis and fibromyalgia (fibromyositis), cancer(s), even neurodegenerative changes such as Alzheimer’s disease, just to name a few.

DM only represents a stage of a disease, daily repeated hyperglycemia, when about 50% of the pancreatic beta cells are destroyed by inflammation, which is a result of excessive consumption of carbohydrates. The pathological changes are progressive and accumulative, unless the individual mindfully reduces the consumption of carbohydrates. Thus, simply waiting for a diagnosis with DM has no value in preventive medicine, is passive and unacceptable.

For preventing and managing DM, I need your help by doing the followings. Please view my videos and understand why DM is not necessarily a genetic disease. Visit your group(s) frequently or join them at Talk Medical, The Diabetic Challenge, and Onco'Zone. Also follow my weekly blogs at “What’s New, Doc?” Lastly, please forward my message to your family members and friends on your network.

Let us joint together in removing DM and many other diseases from our life! Thank you.

Sincerely,
Robert Su, Pharm.B., M.D.
